‘I was surrounded by legends which set high standards.’

Can you tell us something about Texas people do not know?
You can ride your horse to go surfing then walk down the beach to one of the best bowls built by Wally.
You own the skate/surf shop called Board House since 2006. What triggered the idea?
Road trips with pops to South Padre and Mexico as a kid to surf and skate. We always talked about opening a shop together then time decided to be on our side.
What is the main challenge in running a skate/surf shop?
Being everywhere at once (laughing).
Is there much surf in at Port Aransas in the Gulf of Mexico?
Made an almanac year back for days surfed, swell direction, quality etc. I think it was 2015 surfed over 200 days that year.
You have twice as many followers as your shop, but I could not find any information about you. I am puzzled. Who are you?
Yes, I don’t tag myself in shop posts etc. in preference, feels lame. I have some help with the shop IG now but ran that for years and it just didn’t feel right doing so I guess.
How did you get into skateboarding?
I got into skateboarding from lingering around MD surf and skate while hanging at the family business Hamlin Pharmacy next door while the Evans Bro bike company on the other side. I was surrounded by legends which set high standards.
If you could pick any board company, which one would you like to carry
in your shop?
We carry all the companies we would like to besides FA.
‘Jon Comer is a TX legend and an alltime skate goat.’
Let’s talk about the skate scene in Texas. How would you describe it in a few sentences?
Changing, so many new spots popping up within the TX triangle.
What is the vibe between the different cities like Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston etc.?
All very different terrain and scenes for sure but when you meet a TX skater out traveling away from home we are just Texans and proud. We are all starting to get together more with bigger events moving into our zones and drawing all the homies out.
Where does this pride for Texas come from?
Sons of Republic of Texas lineage. TX runs deep.
Which city is the skate capital of Texas?
Austin probably the reason for this is the central location. But to me it’s Corpus Christi because of the integrated surf scene and all the old school locals that have been holding it down, teaching proper etiquette and passing the ways that they enjoyed since the beginning of it all. I can’t find this anywhere else. Houston has a touch of that but the waves stink.
What are the main skate spots?
can’t tell you that till Charlie’s next film drops. Southside skatepark still holding it down.
Any TX pro skaters deserving a shout out?
Homey Brian Botelho from Corpus is my hero and still is. I don’t know if he’s goofy or reg. Nick Holtz is coming up from the valley joining forces with Cody Mac and Snake Farm. Plenty more of course those are the first that come to mind and have a direct influence.
Who is the ultimate godfather of the Texas skate community?
Jon Comer is a TX legend and an all-time skate goat. I had the opportunity to talk with him numerous times and seen him skate the foldout Powell ramp when I was a kid. Jon caught the eye of the world – RIP. Alex Watson is ok too.
Last question. If you could interview any person in the world?
Jesus or Stan Lee. Realistically I’d say Andrew Reynolds or Nolan Ryan to learn a proper front side flip or a split finger fastball. I’d ask them the secret to longevity.
