Charlie Wilkins bail photo for One Shot
Charlie Wilkins • MIT campus, Boston, MA (USA)   © Geoff Kula

‘Charlie Wilkins (pictured) and Donny Barley were skating a rail on the MIT campus — not the famous doubles one — and Charlie hung up and obviously slammed hard. Also, the concrete at this spot was like sandpaper, which you can tell by looking at Charlie who sat down to shake it off. The light was in its “golden hour” so I took a few shots. Even though skate mags didn’t typically publish bail photos, I knew I wanted this one. At one point, Charlie looked up at me and asked: “Is it bad?” and I replied “Nah.” I mean, no one had band-aids/gauze/whatever on hand, so no point in freaking him out. Once the session ended and we got on the T (Boston’s subway) to go home, a kid sitting next to his mom looked at Charlie and buried his face in her arm. Charlie looked at me and said “Thanks, dude.” He knew he looked fucked up. The photo never ran but I used it to promote a local exhibit of my skate shots under the rhetorical question: “Hate your job?” Charlie was stoked on it, so win-win.’
