BackSide Skate Magazine. Photographers. Interview with Ismawadi Utomo, Indo Skate Photographer.

Ismawadi Utomo

Indo Skate Photographer

November 2021

Where are you from?
Hello. I’m Ismawadi Utomo (sharkiiees) from Indonesia.

At what point did you move to photography and why?
When I felt that I’m not productive anymore for skating (laughing). But other than that, I was interested in the camera and the first thing I felt was when I shoot some friends who was skating. I also felt the same way even though I wasn’t skating, and being able to get the right moment was an honor for me personally.

Proudest moment as a photographer?
So far, I’m still proud when I can work with a skate brand and create work with my homies.

Most embarrassing?
When fighting for the moment, because in my opinion photography is not a competition. When I work as a freelancer and have to capture a moment in a rush and there are so many other photographers, it’s embarrassing and disgusting.

How far have you travelled for work?
I went the furthest in my life on a skate trip with the homies to Japan 3 years ago. After that I just travel to places closest to where I live. Maybe we can make an appointment to travel together someday (laughing).

Is there any post-production you do?
I do not do any post-production.

What is on your wishlist?
I want to visit various places in this world, because I can say that I don’t have many wishes. Everything just happens and I think it really deserves to be on the wishlist.

Last question. If you could interview one person, who would it be and why?
This feels unfair if it’s for only one person (laughing). If asked to choose one person, I think I’d like to interview Jake Darwen. All of his photos are amazing, with character and he really inspires me in camera techniques or the application of photo works. And he works in a big brand where there are many pros there and for sure you will produce maximum results too. It’s a dream job!
