‘When I get inspired, I sit down and watch, take notes and observe.’

How would you describe the Nebraska skateboard scene and its community?
The Nebraska skate scene here is awesome. Everyone knows everyone it seems like, and their main bag of comfort zone tricks.
When did you pick up skateboarding and what initiated it?
I picked up skateboarding from a friend I grew up with in the 90s. It was challenging at first and I fell in love immediately, even on a cheap Walmart board.
Any local heroes you looked up to at the time?
There were a couple local heroes I looked up to. Mark Bussey and Sean Malto before he went pro. When I get inspired, I sit down and watch, take notes and observe. These boys killed it in my eyes.
What kind of notes would you take looking at Sean Malto for example?
The notes I was taking were definitely mental notes. Mainly observing their styles and their personal way of attacking spots.
Proudest moment in your skateboard career?
Proudest moment would be my first video part-ender trick, the nose manual in Denver. It was the last day to film for that video, and we randomly drove passed the spot and handled the 3 hour trick immediately. The video is called “so Omaha” and we mainly made a bunch of local videos all for fun. And that was our first big one.
Most embarrassing or funny?
Most embarrassing moment would be my tailbone break. I bled through my pants, and my voice was very high pitched for a while from the pain. Similar to getting sacked. The pain was immense.
Which city to you represent and which one is the skate capitol of Nebraska?
The city I represent is Lincoln. But the skate capital might be Omaha. Their scene seems to be bigger. But again, we are all connected I feel like.
What are the skaters in Nebraska most proud of?
The skaters here are most proud of the younger guys coming up. We get pretty hyped on someone new and young killing it. And we show support.
‘We get pretty hyped on someone new and young killing it. ’
Who is the godfather and godmother of Nebraska skateboarding?
Godfather would have to go to Phil the owner of Precision skateboards. He’s helped me out a few times for sure and I’m appreciative. Not to mention he’s in his 60s still skating. Godmother I am drawing a blank here.
What are some of the challenges in Nebraska?
Challenges here in Nebraska would definitely be Winter. Especially with skateboarding. The few indoor parks we have help.
Last question. If you could interview a person?
If I could interview a person here it would definitely be Levi Drake on the Precision team. He’s a younger kid on our team but he has vocabulary of his own. And everything needs to be decoded. We are starting a book of his quotes to tell you the truth. A couple of his quotes are “wow that Ollie was higher than my scalp” or he will start a sentence and half way end it, and start a new sentence. “Nahhh I don’t want….wow type shit fam”.
