What is your name and where do you live?
Hi, my name is Varun Kumar & I’m from Delhi, India.
How long have you been drawing skateboard shoes sketches and why?
So, a little back story about me. I’ve been into design since 2015 when one day I suddenly found myself drawn to customising my Android homescreens just to make them look pretty & stand out from the stock look they come up with. This made me realise the huge potential into the design world and I started my Instagram page just to keep track of my digital drawing & learnings. I started dabbling into Adobe Illustrator & never looked back ever since. So, I don’t do “skateboard” sketches if you call it, but I used to draw these stickers which I think would look really cool on a skateboard too.
Where do you get the inspiration from?
A lot of my inspirations come from all the talented designers I follow on social media. People who do little tattoo patches really draw me towards them & inspire me to create cool little object related illustrations. Drawing a face over those regular objects we see all around is extremely satisfying for some reason. Nature & surroundings are always a major source.
Proudest moment so far?
Being a self-taught designer really pushes me to give back to other people like me who struggle with getting into the field and who want to learn a new skill, so my Instagram page really is all about teaching little tips & tricks along the way. So, when I get messages & comments like I helped them really makes me proud of myself and makes my day.
What does skateboarding mean to you?
So, I don’t personally skateboard because it’s not so mainstream where I like (Delhi). But I really admire the sport and I read somewhere that it really brings you into the moment which I think life is all about, to be in the moment & really live it. It’s like dancing, once the music hits your body. I forget everything around me & I’m really in that 4 minute life that brings me an indescribable joy. If I’ll ever hop on a board, I think it will be the same.
If there is one thing you could change about skateboarding, what would it be?
I guess that would be the injuries, they always look a bit scary tbh. But I guess that’s addictive too.
